Nashville SC 2-1 Inter Miami: Messi's late strike too little, too late as playoff series levelled
Inter Miami are heading to Game 3 against Nashville SC as Lionel Messi's goal proved fruitless in Saturday's defeat at Geodis Park.
Lionel Messi's late goal proved a mere consolation as Inter Miami were beaten 2-1 at Nashville SC to force a Game 3 decider in their first-round MLS playoff tie.
Argentina legend Messi was on target twice in last week's opening clash, which Inter won 3-1 at Chase Stadium to take a lead in the series.
But Sam Surridge's penalty and Josh Bauer's strike put Nashville in command during Game 2 at Geodis Park on Saturday, with Messi's late goal not enough to affect the outcome.
Nashville made a flying start after nine minutes when Rocco Rios Novo was punished for taking down Surridge after hesitating coming off his line, with the striker dusting himself down to convert low to the left of the Inter goalkeeper.
Bauer doubled the scoreline shortly before half-time, coolly slotting in left-footed from Hany Mukhtar's corner.
Luis Suarez was denied by Joe Willis and Messi had a couple of attempts as Inter tried to find a way back into the game, with the latter firing high into the top-right corner after being picked out by Rodrigo De Paul in the 89th minute.
Inter could not find a leveller, though, and they will hope the scars of last season's shock first-round exit to Atlanta United do not weigh too heavy in next week's decider at Chase Stadium.
Data Debrief: In-form Messi scores again but Nashville end Inter hoodoo
Saturday's contest was the 10th time Nashville had faced off against Inter since Messi arrived at the club, with the Coyotes failing to win any of the previous nine.
Messi has been in typically sensational form, contributing eight goals and five assists in his past five MLS appearances but his strike here proved inconsequential.
Inter have scored in 31 of their 36 games, only San Jose Earthquakes (32) have scored goals in more matches in MLS this season.
