Competing at the ATP 500 for the first time in five years, Tsitsipas beat Lorenzo Sonego in the first round and then dug deep against Khachanov to improve his record against the 28 year-old to 9-1.
Tsitsipas is chasing his first title since he triumphed in Monte-Carlo last April and first on hard courts since Los Cabos in 2023. In a positive display against Khachanov, the fourth seed won 80 per cent of his first-serve points and was the more aggressive in the third set to clinch victory after two hours and 29 minutes.
Tsitsipas captured his maiden tour-level win at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Shanghai in 2017. His opponent that day was Khachanov. The 26 year-old has since lifted 11 tour-level trophies, including the ATP Finals crown in 2019. He is the 13th active player to earn 350 tour-level wins.
Tsitsipas will face Matteo Berrettini in the quarter-finals. The Italian defeated Australian Christopher O'Connell 7-6(2), 6-2 to advance after one hour and 32 minutes. Berrettini hit 15 aces and did not face a break point, to reach his second quarter-final of the season. The World No. 30 enjoyed a run to the last eight in Doha last week.
In other action, Italian lucky loser Luca Nardi defeated Zizou Bergs 6-4, 7-6(3)
Frenchman Quentin Halys beat former champion Roberto Bautista Agut 7-6(5), 6-4.
