Bill Belichick: From 6 Super Bowl titles to coaching college football
Bill Belichick, an NFL legend with six Super Bowl titles as head coach of the New England Patriots and two more as an assistant with the New York Giants, has signed a deal this Wednesday to become the head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels football program. The news was confirmed by NFL Network.
A new challenge for a legendary career
At 72 years old, Belichick met with Lee Roberts, chancellor of UNC, to discuss a shared vision: building a college program that serves as a more direct pipeline to the NFL. "It’s been a good year for me. I’ve learned a lot about college football. I had the chance to talk with Chancellor Roberts, and we’re getting close," the coach said on Monday. According to The Athletic, Belichick signed a three-year deal worth $30 million.
An unmatched NFL legacy
A future Pro Football Hall of Famer, Belichick left an indelible mark in his 29 years as a head coach. He started with the Cleveland Browns from 1991 to 1995 and then led the Patriots from 2000 to 2023, building a dynasty alongside Tom Brady, widely regarded as the greatest player in NFL history, whom he drafted in 2000.
With the Patriots, he made nine Super Bowl appearances and won six. Some of his incredible records include:
- 31 playoff wins.
- 13 AFC Championship Game appearances, winning nine.
- 17 AFC East division titles.
Chasing more records takes a pause
In his time in the league, Belichick came just 26 wins shy of matching Don Shula's record of 328 regular-season victories and 14 wins away from reaching Shula’s 347 combined wins in regular season and playoffs. His move to college football may mark the end of that chase, signaling a monumental shift in his career.
