Dak Prescott Out for the Season with the Cowboys
Prescott injured his hamstring in the second half of the Cowboys' Week 9 loss to the Atlanta Falcons.
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones announced Tuesday that quarterback Dak Prescott will miss the rest of the 2024 NFL season as he will undergo surgery to repair a hamstring injury he suffered a couple of weeks ago.
“He’ll have it done in New York. He had a good consultation with specialists last night and wants to have it there; they have top-notch doctors, and his prognosis is very good. It just means we won’t have him for the rest of the year,” Jones reported via '105.3 The Fan.'
The 31-year-old veteran underwent tests revealing that the injury was more serious than initially expected; the tendon partially detached from the bone, requiring surgery to repair it, which will be performed this Wednesday.
To heal the injury, the quarterback even considered rest and rehabilitation as an option, a process that would sideline him for approximately a month and a half—a treatment that would also leave him unable to return this season.
For that reason, he opted for surgery, which will more securely address the issue, and will require three months of recovery.
He will be ready to retake control of the team in the 2025 season.
As of Week 10 of this season, the Cowboys are at three wins and six losses, sitting in third place in the NFC East, a record that nearly puts them out of playoff contention.
Without Prescott, Jones announced that Cooper Rush will be the starter, with Trey Lance as his backup.
“Cooper has shown he has the ability to compete and win games. He gives us our best chances,” said the team owner.
This past September, Prescott became the highest-paid player in NFL history. He signed a four-year contract extension with the Lone Star team worth $240 million, averaging $60 million per year.
