Floyd Mayweather New Owner of the New York Giants?
Floyd Mayweather, boxing legend and five-time world champion in different weight divisions, plans to make an offer, alongside his group of investors, to acquire 10 percent of the New York Giants NFL team.
Mayweather and His Partners’ Proposal
Meyer Orbach, a real estate mogul and business partner of Mayweather, told TMZ Sports on Tuesday: “My partners and I are always looking for different opportunities, including owning sports teams. I can’t comment further on this.” This news comes after last week when John Mara and Steve Tisch, current owners of the Giants, announced that 10 percent of the team was up for sale.
The Situation with the New York Giants
The team issued a statement informing that the Mara and Tisch families have hired Moelis & Company to explore the potential sale of a non-controlling minority stake in the New York Giants. However, it was noted that no further comments would be made regarding the sale process.
The Giants, founded by John Mara’s grandfather, Tim Mara, in 1925, started with an investment of only 500 dollars. In 1991, Bob Tisch, father of Steve, bought 50 percent of the team for 75 million dollars. Today, the franchise ranks seventh in the list of the world’s most valuable teams, valued at 7.3 billion dollars, according to Forbes.
Mayweather and His Partners’ Offer
The group led by Mayweather, who retired undefeated with 50 wins (27 of them by knockout), is preparing an offer of around 700 million dollars to acquire a stake in the New York Giants. Meyer Orbach has experience in owning sports franchises, as since 2016, he has owned almost 20 percent of the Minnesota Timberwolves of the NBA.
The New York Giants are one of the oldest teams in the NFL, alongside the Arizona Cardinals, Chicago Bears, and Green Bay Packers. Since their foundation, they have won the title eight times: four times as National Champions (1927, 1934, 1938, and 1956) and four times in the Super Bowl era (XXI, XXV, XLII, and XLVI).
