Jalen Hurts Acknowledges Patrick Mahomes’ Greatness After Super Bowl Victory
"I have a lot of respect for Pat, for everything he has achieved in his career. It’s always a pleasure to compete against him," said Hurts, the Super Bowl MVP, in the post-game press conference.
Respect Between Champions
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts stated this Sunday that he has "a lot of respect" for Patrick Mahomes, leader of the Kansas City Chiefs, and that it is always a pleasure to compete against him. This comes after defeating his rival in the Super Bowl in New Orleans and being crowned NFL champion.
"Things happen when they are meant to. Last time (in the 2023 Super Bowl, when we lost to the Chiefs), it wasn’t our moment. Sometimes you just have to accept that and wait for your turn," he added.
The Eagles ended the reign of Mahomes' Chiefs and claimed their second Super Bowl title after a dominant 40-22 victory over Andy Reid’s team in the final at Caesars Superdome.
Additionally, the Eagles avenged their loss from two years ago in Glendale, Arizona, and prevented Kansas City from becoming the first franchise to win three consecutive Super Bowls.
Hurts Shines in New Orleans
The star of the Eagles’ championship run was Jalen Hurts, who completed 17 of 22 passes for 221 yards and two touchdowns. The Philadelphia quarterback also added 72 rushing yards on 11 carries and scored another TD with his legs.
Visibly emotional, Hurts was on the verge of tears as he spoke about what it means to be a champion.
"This is not something normal. It has been an unprecedented journey. It means a lot—because of all the work, the challenges I faced with my head held high," said Hurts, pausing several times to hold back his emotions.
"That kid (referring to himself) always stuck to his vision," he added.
And he made it clear that this is just the beginning for the Eagles: "We’re not stopping here. We’re going for more."
Nick Sirianni Praises His Quarterback
Philadelphia head coach Nick Sirianni did not hold back in praising his QB, emphasizing his mentality and growth.
"Hurts keeps improving, he knows how to win, and he does a great job blocking out the outside noise. Jalen is special. The criticism drove me crazy because he’s such an incredible player, works so hard, and stays focused on getting better," said Sirianni.
He also highlighted the effort his team puts in every day and their ability to overcome all obstacles on their way to the franchise’s second Super Bowl victory.
