Boston Celtics, NBA Champions, Have a New Owner for $6.1 Billion
Businessman Bill Chisholm has reached an agreement with the Grousbeck family, owners of the Boston Celtics of the NBA, to acquire a majority stake in the franchise for $6.1 billion. This amount sets a new record for the purchase of a sports team in the United States, surpassing the $6.05 billion paid for the Washington Commanders of the NFL in 2023, as reported by The Boston Globe and ESPN.
A Historic Deal
Chisholm, a Californian entrepreneur and owner of the private equity firm Symphony Technology Group, grew up in Massachusetts and is a passionate Celtics fan. The Grousbeck family purchased the franchise in 2002 for approximately $360 million. In 2023, they announced their intention to sell 51% of the team, but Wyc Grousbeck, the current governor of the franchise, is expected to remain at the helm of the Celtics until 2028.
With this deal, the Celtics remain one of the most valuable franchises in the NBA. They are the reigning champions, having won their most recent title in 2023, adding to their 2008 championship, both achieved under the ownership of the Grousbeck family.
