Damian Lillard’s Next Move: Top Landing Spots After Bucks Release the Veteran Guard
Damian Lillard is officially a free agent for the first time in his career after the Milwaukee Bucks waived the nine-time All-Star in a move that stunned the NBA.
The Bucks opted to stretch the $113 million remaining on Lillard’s contract over five years, clearing cap space to sign center Myles Turner and ending the high-profile but ultimately disappointing Antetokounmpo-Lillard partnership after just two seasons.
Lillard, who averaged 24.9 points and 7.1 assists last season, suffered a torn Achilles in the playoffs and is expected to miss most, if not all, of the 2025-26 campaign.
Miami Heat: A Long-Awaited Union?
The Miami Heat have been consistently linked to Lillard, dating back to before his trade to Milwaukee in 2023. Miami has long sought another superstar to pair with Bam Adebayo, and Lillard’s scoring and clutch shot-making would fit seamlessly into Erik Spoelstra’s system. The Heat remain in the market for a top-tier perimeter creator to elevate their offense and contend in the Eastern Conference.
NBA insider Chris Haynes has again identified the Heat as a team to “keep an eye on,” noting that Miami was one of Lillard’s preferred destinations during his last trade saga. While Lillard isn’t the same explosive scorer he was in his prime, he was still an All-Star last season and could provide the Heat with the offensive boost they’ve lacked in recent playoff runs.
Other Contenders: Spurs, Warriors, Portland
Another intriguing option is the San Antonio Spurs, who recently moved on from Chris Paul and are looking for veteran leadership alongside Victor Wembanyama and a young core. With De’Aaron Fox entering the final year of his contract, Lillard could provide insurance and experience for a Spurs team eyeing contention in 2026.
The Golden State Warriors also stand out as a potential landing spot. Lillard, an Oakland native, is beloved in the Bay Area, and his recovery timeline could align with the Warriors’ veteran core of Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, and Jimmy Butler, all signed through 2027. If Lillard is healthy for the 2026-27 campaign, he could help Golden State mount one last title run.
A sentimental return to the Portland Trail Blazers, where Lillard spent his first 11 seasons, is not out of the question. Lillard has openly discussed his emotional ties to Portland, and while the Blazers are rebuilding, a homecoming could be a fitting way to close out his Hall of Fame career if a title chase elsewhere doesn’t materialize.
What’s Next?
Lillard’s market will depend on his recovery and the willingness of contenders to be patient. Given his injury and age, he may sign a short-term, minimum-value deal with a contender, or wait until he’s fully healthy to join a team with a clear path to a championship. The Heat, Spurs, Warriors, and Blazers are all in the mix, but Lillard’s next move will likely prioritize both fit and the opportunity to finally compete for an NBA title.
