Mac McClung Makes History with Three-Peat in NBA Dunk Contest
Mac McClung made history this Saturday in the NBA, becoming the first player to win the All-Star Dunk Contest three times in a row. Currently playing in the G League with the Osceola Magic, the affiliate team of the Orlando Magic, McClung once again showcased his creativity, power, and flair in a competition that has lost some of its shine in recent years. Despite the absence of big-name stars, his talent has kept the event exciting.
From the start, McClung was the clear favorite. Stephon Castle (San Antonio Spurs) threw down an impressive 360-degree dunk, scoring 47.2 points, while Matas Buzelis (Chicago Bulls) and Andrew Jackson Jr. (Milwaukee Bucks) struggled, earning 40 and 43.8 points, respectively. McClung set himself apart with his first attempt—jumping over a convertible, grabbing the ball from the roof, and throwing down a jaw-dropping reverse dunk, earning a perfect 50.
An Unforgettable Finish
In the final, Castle went for something innovative, catching an alley-oop mid-air, bringing the ball under his legs, and finishing with authority, scoring 49.6 points. But McClung took it up a notch with an even crazier move. On his third attempt, he dunked two balls in one jump—grabbing one from a teammate on a hoverboard and another from a ladder—throwing them both down at the same time to earn another perfect 50.
Castle answered back with a 50 on his final dunk, executing a behind-the-back slam. However, McClung sealed his third title with a jaw-dropping final dunk—soaring over Evan Mobley (Cleveland Cavaliers), tapping the ball off the rim mid-air, and finishing with a powerful slam, securing yet another perfect score.
The judging panel featured Kevin Garnett, Baron Davis, Jason Richardson, and Tracy McGrady, with a fan vote as the fifth judge. The event also paid tribute to Vince Carter in honor of the 25th anniversary of his legendary dunk contest in Oakland, right across the bay from San Francisco.
McClung has now become the first-ever three-time champion of the contest. While he hinted that this might have been his final appearance, he left the door open for a return if the fans demand it.
