Michael Jordan's Rookie Jersey Sells for Over $4 Million
A Chicago Bulls jersey worn and signed by Michael Jordan during a preseason game in his rookie NBA year was auctioned by Sotheby’s on Wednesday for $4.215 million.
According to the auction house, Jordan wore this jersey on October 5, 1984, after being selected third overall in the NBA Draft by Chicago. The game took place in Peoria, Illinois, in front of 2,000 spectators.
A Unique Piece of NBA History
Sotheby’s highlighted that this red jersey, featuring "Chicago" and the number 23 on the front, is the only authenticated piece from Jordan's rookie season.
The basketball icon would go on to dominate the sport, winning six NBA championships with the Bulls in the 1990s. For Sotheby’s, this jersey represents the beginning of one of the most extraordinary careers in sports history.
