Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Activated his ‘Michael Jordan’ Mode and Is Racing Toward the NBA MVP
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander played his 69th game with more than 20 points consecutively to match Michael Jordan
Despite having secured the top spot in the Western Conference for several weeks with six games left in the regular season, Oklahoma City Thunder continues to push full throttle, and last night they defeated an up-and-coming Pistons team (119-103) to extend their winning streak to 11 games, largely thanks to the performance of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who activated his ‘Michael Jordan’ mode.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander ties Jordan's record and goes for Chamberlain
Another night in Oklahoma, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s performance was one to remember… and by no means is this the first one this season. In fact, it’s rare to have a night where he doesn’t put on a show. In 35 minutes on the floor, the leader of the Thunder scored 33 points with a 38% shooting percentage, three assists, six rebounds, three steals, two blocks… and only one turnover.
This is nothing new for Oklahoma City Thunder fans, who are used to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander delivering. He played his 69th game, scoring over 20 points consecutively. This streak allowed him to match Michael Jordan as the player with the longest consecutive games with over 20 points in NBA history. However, the record still belongs to Wilt Chamberlain, who managed to string together 80 consecutive games with more than 20 points.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander wants the NBA MVP
With such impressive stats, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander continues to rack up memorable nights to strengthen his case as one of the top contenders for this season’s MVP award, surpassing Nikola Jovic. This is especially true considering that his stellar performances have helped turn the Thunder into the team with the best record (64-12) this season in the NBA.
As the player with the highest points per game (32.8) this season, ahead of Antetokounmpo (30.4) and Jokic (29.7), Shai Gilgeous-Alexander still has six regular-season games to go in order to prove he deserves the MVP… while continuing to chase Chamberlain's record. However, we’ll see if he decides to pace himself and start thinking about the ‘playoffs’.
