Three-Team Trade Talks Center on Jonathan Kuminga, Kings, Warriors, and Pistons
The Golden State Warriors, Sacramento Kings, and Detroit Pistons are engaged in discussions over a potential three-team trade that could see Jonathan Kuminga and Dennis Schröder land in Sacramento.
While the framework remains fluid, the Sacramento Kings have been aggressive in their pursuit of Jonathan Kuminga, a 22-year-old restricted free agent whose future in Golden State Warriors is uncertain after the two sides failed to agree on an extension before the 2024-25 season.
Sacramento’s proposed package reportedly includes sending Devin Carter, Dario Šarić, and two second-round picks to the Warriors, while Malik Monk would be moved to Detroit. Dennis Schröder, who recently agreed to a three-year, $45 million deal with the Kings, would officially join Sacramento as part of the multi-team arrangement.
For the Pistons, Monk would add valuable perimeter shooting alongside Cade Cunningham, while the Warriors would receive a mix of young talent and draft assets as they recalibrate their roster.
Warriors Reluctant, Market for Kuminga Tepid
Despite Sacramento’s interest, Golden State’s front office has shown little enthusiasm for the Kings’ offers so far. The Warriors are reportedly uninterested in acquiring Monk as part of the deal and are seeking at least one reliable rotation player in any Kuminga trade.
There is also strong resistance within the Warriors organization to sending Kuminga to a division rival, with insiders suggesting that Golden State would likely match any offer sheet Kuminga might sign with Sacramento.
Kuminga’s trade market has been less robust than anticipated, in part due to inconsistency in his role and performance. After a promising third season averaging 16.1 points per game, he was limited to just 47 appearances and saw his minutes fluctuate, particularly following the addition of Jimmy Butler to the Warriors’ veteran-heavy roster.
Other teams, such as the Bulls, Heat, and Pelicans, have been linked to Kuminga, but Sacramento has emerged as the most persistent suitor.
No Deal Imminent, But Sacramento Remains Persistent
As of now, no agreement is imminent, and negotiations remain ongoing. The Kings are reportedly unwilling to include core pieces like Keegan Murray in any deal, focusing instead on a package centered around Carter and Šarić.
For Kuminga, a move to Sacramento could offer a more defined role and greater opportunity to develop, as the Kings are not operating under the immediate championship pressure that defines Golden State’s timeline.
The situation highlights the complexities of restricted free agency and the challenges of orchestrating multi-team trades in today’s NBA. While Sacramento’s pursuit of Kuminga is clear, the Warriors’ reluctance and the lack of a compelling offer have kept talks at a standstill.
All sides are expected to continue exploring options as free agency progresses, with the possibility of a breakthrough if circumstances or offers change.
