Could Ja Morant Be the Next One On the Move After Grizzlies-Magic Desmond Bane Trade?
The Memphis Grizzlies sent shockwaves through the NBA by trading Desmond Bane to the Orlando Magic in a blockbuster deal that netted Memphis a package centered on Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Cole Anthony, and a haul of first-round draft picks.
The move marks a clear pivot point for the Grizzlies’ roster construction and has fueled widespread speculation about the future of their franchise centerpiece, Ja Morant. But is Morant actually on the trading block, and what does this major shakeup mean for Memphis moving forward?
Grizzlies’ direction: rebuild or retool?
Trading away Bane, a key member of Memphis’ core alongside Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr., has led many to wonder if a full rebuild is underway. The Grizzlies now possess significant draft capital and young assets, a classic signpost for a team considering a reset.
However, ESPN’s Tim MacMahon and other insiders have emphasized that Memphis still views Morant as the “face of the franchise,” and any trade involving him would only occur if Morant himself requested a move. The front office’s recent decisions—including the coaching change and system overhaul—have all been made with Morant’s preferences and long-term role in mind.
While the Bane trade is a major shift, it is not necessarily the first domino in a teardown. Instead, it may be a strategic move to re-tool around Morant and Jackson, using the new draft assets to either acquire another star or build a deeper supporting cast.
The Grizzlies’ struggles last season, including injuries and off-court issues, exposed the need for change, but the front office appears committed to re-centering the team around Morant rather than moving on from him.
What if Morant becomes available?
Despite the Grizzlies’ public stance, the NBA rumor mill is in overdrive with hypothetical Ja Morant trades. If Memphis were to shift course and make Morant available, several teams would be immediate suitors.
The Brooklyn Nets are often mentioned as a top landing spot, thanks to their surplus of future first-round picks and a roster in need of a franchise star.
The Houston Rockets, flush with young talent and draft capital, could also make a compelling offer, especially if they miss out on other marquee targets.
The Sacramento Kings, looking to escape the NBA’s middle tier, might see Morant as the dynamic guard to pair with Domantas Sabonis and reinvigorate their roster.
However, as of now, these scenarios remain speculative. The Grizzlies’ current plan is to build around Morant, not trade him. Unless Morant requests a move, he is expected to remain the focal point in Memphis.
