Knicks Stun Celtics Again, Take 2-0 Lead with Another 20-Point Comeback
The New York Knicks have flipped the script on the defending champion Boston Celtics, leading the series 2-0.
The New York Knicks now lead their series against Boston Celtics 2-0, pulling off back-to-back 20-point comeback wins at TD Garden in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
Wednesday night’s 91-90 victory was a near carbon copy of Game 1, with the Knicks’s resilience and clutch defense silencing the Boston crowd and putting the New York-based team just two wins away from a trip to the conference finals.
Knicks Rewrite the Narrative
Coming into this series, Boston was the heavy favorite after sweeping the Knicks 4-0 in the regular season and finishing with the NBA’s best record. The Celtics, defending their title, had rarely let leads slip all year. But the Knicks, undaunted by the challenge and the TD Garden atmosphere, have now made history as the first team ever to erase 20-point deficits in consecutive playoff games against the same opponent.
Game 1 saw New York rally from a huge hole to win in overtime, capped by a game-saving steal from Mikal Bridges. Game 2 followed a similar script, with the Celtics again building a 20-point cushion before the Knicks stormed back, closing the game on a 38-17 run.
Game 2 Recap: Bridges, Hart, and Towns Lead the Charge
Boston looked in full control for three quarters, starting with a 16-4 run and holding the Knicks scoreless for nearly five minutes. By the third, the Celtics led by 20, and it seemed like the series would be tied. But New York’s defense locked in, and the Celtics’ offense unraveled, going more than eight minutes without a basket in the fourth quarter and missing 13 straight shots.
Josh Hart led the Knicks with 23 points, while Karl-Anthony Towns delivered a huge double-double with 21 points and 17 rebounds. Jalen Brunson, despite a tough shooting night, hit two clutch free throws with 12.7 seconds left to give New York the lead and finished with 17 points. The real heroics came from Mikal Bridges, who scored all 14 of his points in the fourth quarter and sealed the win with a game-ending steal for the second straight contest.
For Boston, Jaylen Brown and Derrick White each scored 20, but Jayson Tatum struggled, shooting just 5-for-19 for 13 points. Kristaps Porziņģis, still recovering from illness, came off the bench for only 14 minutes and contributed eight points.
What’s Next: Knicks in Command, Celtics on the Ropes
With the series shifting to Madison Square Garden for Game 3 on Saturday, May 10, the Knicks hold all the momentum and a statistical edge-teams that win the first two games on the road in a best-of-seven series go on to advance nearly 86% of the time. Boston, meanwhile, faces tough questions after letting two massive leads slip and seeing their offense go ice cold in crunch time.
