Nearly two years after the blockbuster move that sent Luka Doncic from the Dallas Mavericks to Los Angeles, Donald Trump brought the trade back into the spotlight and said it could ultimately be remembered as one of the worst deals in sports history.
During a political speech in Dallas, Trump recalled the move that stunned the NBA in February 2025, when Doncic left the Mavericks and Anthony Davis became the centerpiece of the package Dallas received in return.
“I have to tell you, I don’t understand the trade. That trade is not good. What do I know about basketball?” Trump said while discussing a deal that remains a major topic of debate.
Trump Wants the Doncic Trade Reversed
The U.S. president went even further, comparing Doncic’s departure to one of the most famous transactions in American sports history: the 1919 trade that sent Babe Ruth from the Boston Red Sox to the New York Yankees.
“Maybe we can redo that trade? I redo deals all the time. We have to redo that deal,” Trump said, insisting that he never fully understood the decision made by the Mavericks.
He even suggested that the move could ultimately go down as one of the worst transactions in NBA and American sports history.
“It could go down as the worst trade in the history of sports,” he added.
Doncic Begins a New Chapter With the Lakers
The trade completely changed the outlook for both franchises. Doncic, who had spent much of his career as the face of the Dallas Mavericks, was forced to begin a new chapter with the Los Angeles Lakers following his unexpected departure.
The Slovenian star will now enter another season in Los Angeles without LeBron James, aiming to lead the Lakers back into contention for an NBA championship.
