Boxing Organization Confirms Pacquiao Was Robbed in Latest Fight
The WBC admits the draw between Manny Pacquiao and Mario Barrios didn’t reflect the true outcome. Could a rematch be on the horizon for the Filipino legend?
Manny Pacquiao (62-8-3, 39 KOs), a boxing icon, returned to the ring at 46 years old to face Mario Barrios (29-2-2, 18 KOs) for the WBC welterweight title. The bout, which ended in a controversial majority draw, has sparked strong reactions—and now even the sport’s governing body is weighing in.
WBC Recognizes Pacquiao’s Dominance
Despite the official result (114-114, 113-115, 114-114), many fans and analysts believed Pacquiao had done enough to win. His performance, full of energy, speed, and experience, reminded the world why he’s one of the sport’s all-time greats.
Mauricio Sulaimán, president of the World Boxing Council (WBC), agreed with that sentiment. Speaking after the fight, he acknowledged that the draw didn’t reflect what happened in the ring. “That draw felt like a clear victory,” said Sulaimán. “If Manny Pacquiao retires now, he walks out through the front door, on top.”
He also confirmed that the organization would support a rematch if Pacquiao chooses to continue: “Absolutely. No doubt about it.”
Pacquiao Proves Doubters Wrong
The WBC had previously faced criticism for authorizing Pacquiao’s return due to his age and long absence from the sport. However, Sulaimán defended the decision, highlighting the electrifying atmosphere and the Filipino’s impressive showing. “He earned the world’s respect,” he emphasized. “He looked amazing, outboxed Barrios, and showed he still has the tools to compete at the highest level.”
