Canelo Álvarez’s Power Will Eventually Destroy Terence Crawford, Says Vergil Ortiz
Vergil Ortiz Jr. believes the punching power of Canelo Álvarez will be too much for Terence Crawford when they face off in Las Vegas.
Vergil Ortiz Jr. has felt the raw strength of Canelo Álvarez firsthand during intense sparring sessions, and he warns that the Mexican star’s power will be unlike anything Terence Crawford has ever faced. The two will clash on September 13 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
Ortiz Backs Canelo’s Heavy Hands
“There are different types of power,” Ortiz told The Ring. “With Canelo it feels like an unstoppable force. He’s not necessarily explosive, but man, he’s heavy-handed. It’s not about favoritism toward Canelo, it’s just logical— a bigger great fighter beats a smaller great fighter.”
Álvarez (63-2-2, 39 KOs) has been competing at 168 pounds since 2018, although he hasn’t scored a knockout in his last seven fights across four years. Once recognized as pound-for-pound king in 2021, his momentum slowed after a 2022 loss to Dmitry Bivol at light heavyweight.
Meanwhile, Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs) saw his streak of 11 consecutive stoppages end last year when he beat WBA champion Israil Madrimov by decision in his debut at 154 pounds. The Omaha native had previously dominated at 140 and 147 pounds, becoming undisputed in both divisions.
The Weight Factor in Vegas Showdown
Ortiz, ranked No. 2 at super welterweight by The Ring, believes Crawford is biting off more than he can chew.
“Crawford fought once at 154, and now he’s jumping up two weight classes. And it’s not just against any opponent—he’s facing Canelo Álvarez. Honestly, I feel like Crawford should have tested himself against someone else at 168 before going straight for Canelo.”
Despite acknowledging Crawford’s skillset, Ortiz stressed that the size difference could prove decisive. “On the scale, they might look similar, but being a natural fighter at that weight is completely different. I think Canelo will win, but even if Crawford loses, it won’t tarnish his career. He has the talent, but I just don’t see him pulling this one off.”
