Who Is Christian Mbilli, the Undefeated Champion Set to Be Canelo Álvarez’s Next Opponent?

  • Canelo Álvarez’s next opponent has a story shaped by moving between countries, an Olympic career, and an opportunity he has pursued for years. Who is Christian Mbilli, and what makes him a fighter to watch?

Christian Mbilli, the Man Waiting to Face Canelo Álvarez

Canelo Álvarez will return to the ring this Saturday, October 31, to face an opponent who has spent years waiting for the chance to fight him. The setting will be Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where the Mexican will take on Christian Mbilli, a boxer who has been making a name for himself among the sport’s elite and now faces the biggest test of his career.

The fight will bring together two very different careers: that of a former undisputed champion with extensive international experience and that of a fighter who has built his path between France and Canada. Mbilli intends to make the most of this opportunity, but he still needs to prove he can compete at the highest level against a figure like Álvarez.

Who Is Christian Mbilli and What Is His Record?

Christian Mbilli was born in Yaoundé, Cameroon, on April 26, 1995. His childhood was shaped by separation from his mother, who emigrated to France when he was young. He eventually reunited with her in Europe, where he began boxing at age 15 and quickly made a name for himself in the amateur circuit.

He represented France at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games, reaching the quarterfinals before losing to Cuban boxer Arlen López, who went on to win the gold medal. After the Olympics, Mbilli moved to Montreal to begin his professional career under trainer Marc Ramsay.

At 31, Mbilli holds a record of 29 wins, 24 by knockout, no losses and one draw. Nicknamed The Panther, he is known for putting pressure on his opponents, throwing combinations and looking to engage at close range. According to a 2021 interview published by Le Journal de Québec, Mbilli himself described France and Quebec as his two adopted homes.

The Draw That Raised Questions Ahead of His Fight With the Mexican

Since making his professional debut in 2017, Mbilli has earned notable victories over fighters such as Carlos Góngora and Sergiy Derevyanchenko. In June 2025, he knocked out Maciej Sulecki in the first round to win the WBC interim super middleweight title.

However, his next fight presented a different challenge. In September 2025, he fought to a split-decision draw against Guatemala’s Lester Martínez, who landed more punches throughout the bout.

After the WBC stripped Terence Crawford of the title in December 2025 over a dispute involving sanctioning fees, Mbilli was elevated to WBC super middleweight world champion in January 2026. His fight against Álvarez will mark his first title defense and his first appearance since that draw.

What Could Happen When Mbilli Faces Canelo Álvarez?

Mbilli’s team spent years working to bring him closer to a fight against the Mexican star. In comments to AFP in early October, the French boxer explained that their strategy was to make him an opponent impossible to ignore. Winning the world title ultimately opened the door to the matchup he had been pursuing.

The experience gap will be one of the fight’s key factors. Canelo has 68 professional fights and world championships across four weight divisions, while Mbilli enters the matchup with 30 bouts and an undefeated record. The Frenchman has power and relentless pressure on his side, but he will need to avoid leaving himself vulnerable to counterpunches.
