Last Words of Lazar DuKic Before His Death at the CrossFit Games Revealed
More details have emerged about Lazar Dukic's death at the CrossFit Games following the release of the documentary Tragedy at the CrossFit Games, produced by the Buttery Bros.
The documentary begins with previously unreleased footage of the Serbian athlete moments before starting Event 1, where he tragically died just meters from the finish line, which could be considered his last words before the tragic events.
In an interview with Sevan Matossian, who interviewed him for the last time, Dukic discussed his strategy, the instructions given to them, and confirmed that he had swum in the same lake where he lost his life just days before.
"Last night they said to keep the boys to the left... Now they said not to think about it, just go from there to here however you want, so yeah," Dukic started off saying.
"I'm so scared, I mean, stressed. Normally, when the event is good for you, you’re more stressed than when it’s not, so I’m pretty stressed," was one of the most shocking statements, before explaining his plan to take advantage of the event.
"Stay close to the lead pack in the race, but try not to blow up because even if you’re 20 seconds behind, 20 seconds in 800 meters is nothing, because I think I’m a much better swimmer than the rest of them. But try to stay ahead of Fikowski and Sprague because they’re good swimmers, and Ricky," he said.
"Luka and I actually were here on Wednesday and went over the exact course, so it’s going to be fine," he added, referring to the route laid out by the CrossFit Games organizers.
As we had discussed earlier, Dukic and his brother had already “tested” the event they would face days later.
The documentary describes the competition process normally until competitors start crossing the finish line. At that point, questions arise about Lazar Dukic, as all the other athletes had already finished.
There was considerable confusion because the Serbian athlete was in an isolated lead group, making it unlikely that he would have been seen in a lower position.
Sevan Matossian, the documentary creator, also mentions that an assistant attempted to jump into the water to help one of the athletes. Without providing further details, Matossian said the assistant was stopped, without offering more clues, until the worst was confirmed: the death of Lazar Dukic.
