Algeria looks for a 100% group stage record in final group match against eliminated Equatorial Guinea
All the excitement of AFCON 2025 exclusively on beIN Sports.
One of the two Group E final matches on Wednesday is a peculiar affair in that the result won’t change the destiny of either participant at AFCON 2025.
Algeria has advanced through to the Last 16 stage as group winners with back-to-back victories against Burkina Faso and Sudan, the sides currently in second and third in the standings.
Although both those teams have three points, were Algeria to lose against Equatorial Guinea live on beIN SPORTS on Wednesday, and Sudan or Burkina Faso win their match-up, it would make no difference to the top of the standings. At AFCON, head-to-head records come first as an eliminator when points are tied, which means that Algeria still prevail.
Although, the Desert Warriors reaching the Last 16 should not seem particularly newsworthy, it’s the first time Algeria has made knockouts since winning the trophy in 2019.
The form of the team captain, Riyad Mahrez, has been a revelation with three goals scored, and fullback, Rayan Ait-Nouri, was paying full tribute to him a day ahead of the match. “He is someone I respect a lot, and he deserves all the success coming his way,” said the current Manchester player about the former one.
Equatorial Guinea is in the upside realm compared to Algeria. Even if the side was to defeat Algeria and move onto three points in the standings, it would not be enough to overcome either Burkina Faso or Sudan, who both defeated the National Thunder.
This is the first time that Equatorial Guinea have ever been eliminated at the group stages in the country’s AFCON history, but the team will still want to avoid a tally of three defeats from three.
