(VIDEO) Emiliano "Dibu" Martínez Wins Lev Yashin Trophy for Second Consecutive Year
Emiliano 'Dibu' Martínez has claimed the Yashin Trophy for the second year in a row, awarded to the best goalkeeper of the year during the Ballon d'Or ceremony, after leading Argentina to Copa America victory.
At 32, the Aston Villa goalkeeper outperformed other top contenders, including Spain's Euro-winning keeper Unai Simon and Real Madrid’s Champions League-winning Andriy Lunin. Simon finished second, followed by Lunin, with PSG's Gianluigi Donnarumma and Milan's Mike Maignan rounding out the top five. Giorgi Mamardashvili of Valencia took seventh place.
"It's an honor to be here again," said Martínez, who expressed that as a child, he dreamed of being Argentina's national goalkeeper and can hardly believe all he has achieved.
The Argentine star won the Golden Glove at the Copa America last July and previously claimed FIFA's The Best award for his outstanding performance. Additionally, his contributions to Argentina’s World Cup victory in Qatar, where he was awarded the Golden Glove, solidified his status as one of the top goalkeepers worldwide.
Martínez, known for his intense presence on the field, addressed his competitive approach, noting, "For Argentines, it's not seen as excessive. Off the field, I'm just a regular person, but on the pitch, I transform because winning is everything."
He added, "I don't see myself as the best; there are so many incredible players. For me, team titles matter most, and I trust my coaches' guidance."
