Lionel Messi and Inter Miami delivered a thrilling friendly match against Club América at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
The match marked the debut of Argentine coach Javier Mascherano at the helm of Inter Miami, while América, led by Brazilian manager André Jardine, showcased a solid performance for most of the game. During regulation, Henry Martín and Israel Reyes scored for the Águilas, while Messi and Tomás Avilés found the net for Miami.
Messi’s provocative gesture sparks controversy
Messi's performance stood out not only for his goal but also for his response to persistent boos from the Mexican fans. After scoring, the Argentine star turned toward the stands, spread his arms, and displayed his jersey while gesturing with his hands to highlight Argentina’s three World Cup titles. The celebration inflamed tensions among América supporters, who continued to jeer the Inter Miami captain.
In the penalty shootout, Mascherano’s team proved more clinical, with successful conversions by Héctor David Martínez, David Ruiz, and Santiago Morales. Meanwhile, América managed only two successful attempts, from Javairo Dilrosun and Cristian Calderón, with several players missing their kicks from the spot.

Meanwhile, Inter Miami will kick off a preparation tour starting January 29, with a visit to Universitario in Lima, Peru, as they gear up for the new MLS season.
