(VIDEO) Tragic Death of 16-Year-Old Goalkeeper After Chest Save
Edson Lopes Gama, a 16-year-old goalkeeper, tragically lost his life after stopping a penalty with his chest during a training session in the state of Amazonas, Brazil. The direct impact of the ball between his sternum and diaphragm caused the teenager to collapse in severe pain.
A Young Athlete with No History of Medical Conditions
The incident occurred as Edson performed the well-known "cristo" move to block the goal. Despite efforts to save him, Edson passed away on January 5 at Maués Hospital, after an 11-hour journey along rural roads to reach medical assistance.
Edson Lopes had no history of heart conditions, making his sudden death even more shocking.
The Pain of His Family and His Passion for Football
“Today, you touched all of Brazil. I never imagined it would be like this. You were a dedicated player and a child who was always happy. My brother, we mourn your loss, but you left us doing what you loved most: playing football," shared his brother on social media.
At Edson’s heartfelt funeral, his family wore Gremio jerseys in honor of the team he passionately supported.
