Argentina Defeats Uruguay and Moves Closer to The 2026 World Cup with a Stunning Goal by Thiago Almada
The Argentina National Team took a crucial step toward the 2026 World Cup by securing a 1-0 victory over Uruguay in the latest edition of the Río de la Plata Classic, part of the South American qualifiers.
At a packed Estadio Centenario in Montevideo, Lionel Scaloni's team clinched three valuable points thanks to a spectacular goal by Thiago Almada in the 68th minute. With this win, the Albiceleste reached 28 points in the standings, solidifying its lead and widening the gap over its closest rivals. They now hold a six-point advantage over Ecuador, while Uruguay, with 20 points, dropped to fourth place, surpassed by Brazil, which has 21.
A high-intensity clash in Montevideo
From the start, Uruguay took control of the match, with Federico Valverde, Rodrigo Bentancur, and Giorgian de Arrascaeta dictating the tempo in midfield. The aggressive pressing by Marcelo Bielsa's squad forced Argentina to retreat, often positioning all 11 players in their own half.
Full-backs Nahitan Nández and Mathías Olivera pushed forward constantly, linking up with Facundo Pellistri and Maximiliano Araújo to generate danger down the flanks. Meanwhile, the Albiceleste relied on counterattacks through Giuliano Simeone, Julián Álvarez, and Thiago Almada, though they struggled to break through the defense.
The first major chance came from a dangerous cross by Araújo, but none of his teammates could finish it. Argentina responded with a long-range shot from Enzo Fernández, which missed the target, and an attempt by Julián Álvarez, comfortably saved by goalkeeper Sergio Rochet.
The home crowd passionately backed La Celeste, while the Argentine fans echoed their iconic chant: "Muchachos, ahora nos volvimos a ilusionar." Just before halftime, De Arrascaeta had to be substituted due to injury, with Nicolás de la Cruz taking his place. The first half ended in a goalless draw.
Thiago Almada, the hero of the night
In the second half, Argentina gained full control, neutralizing Uruguay, which failed to create any real threats against Emiliano "Dibu" Martínez.
Goalkeeper Sergio Rochet made a brilliant save to deny Almada his first goal and later stopped a shot from Giuliano Simeone. However, in the 68th minute, Thiago Almada unleashed a powerful strike that left the goalkeeper helpless, putting Argentina ahead.
Despite Nicolás González receiving a red card in the final minutes, Argentina managed the game effectively, securing a crucial win. The reigning world champions now turn their focus to their next big challenge: a highly anticipated showdown against Brazil on March 25, while Uruguay prepares for an away match against Bolivia.
