Barcelona Announces New Team Captains
Barcelona has revealed the names of the five captains for the men's first team for the upcoming season: Marc-André Ter Stegen, Ronald Araujo, Frenkie de Jong, Raphinha, and Pedri, in that order.
In a vote conducted by the squad, Ter Stegen was selected to take over as the first captain from Sergi Roberto, who left the team this summer after his contract ended.
The German goalkeeper will assume the captaincy for the first time. Last season, following Gerard Piqué’s departure, Ter Stegen was promoted to fourth captain.
Ter Stegen, who has played 414 matches for Barcelona since joining in the 2014-2015 season, was named second captain last season and wore the armband on several occasions.
A notable change is the appointment of Raphinha as fourth captain and Pedri as the fifth. The Brazilian has made 88 appearances in his two seasons with Barcelona, while the Canary Islander has played 144 matches since arriving in the 2020-2021 season.
Additionally, Araujo, with 150 appearances, has been promoted to second captain, and De Jong, with 213 appearances for the club, will be the third captain.
