Boca Juniors Turn 120 Amid Transition and Challenges
On April 3, 2025, Boca Juniors celebrate 120 years of football history, a legacy built on passion, working-class pride, and a cabinet full of trophies. Founded in 1905 by five sons of Genoese immigrants in Plaza Solís, in Buenos Aires' iconic La Boca neighborhood, the club has become a symbol of Argentine football. Yet, this anniversary finds the Xeneize in a period of transition, far from its former continental dominance.
A legacy forged in history
From the beginning, Boca has represented resilience and popular identity. In 1925, the club gained international fame during a historic European tour, defeating teams like Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid, and Bayern Munich. That tour earned Boca the prestigious Copa de Honor, a symbol of its growing global presence.
Over the decades, Boca amassed 35 Argentine league titles, 6 Copa Libertadores, 3 Intercontinental Cups, and numerous domestic and international honors. Legends such as Diego Maradona, Juan Román Riquelme, Carlos Tévez, and Antonio Rattín have worn the famous blue and gold jersey. La Bombonera, their home ground, remains one of the most iconic stadiums in world football.
A difficult present: No international competitions in 2025
Despite its glorious past, Boca’s present is marked by setbacks. In 2025, the club is absent from all international competitions—a rare and painful reality for a team that has been chasing its seventh Copa Libertadores for nearly two decades.
Their continental dream came to an abrupt end on February 25, when they were eliminated in the early qualifying rounds by Alianza Lima of Peru. Domestically, Boca hasn't lifted a trophy since winning the league in 2022.
With Juan Román Riquelme now serving as president and former player Fernando Gago as head coach, the immediate goal is to secure one of three domestic titles on offer: the Apertura, Clausura, or Copa Argentina. The club also has its sights set on the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, where they will aim to restore some international prestige.
