Greenwood Nearing Switch to Jamaica National Team
Olympique de Marseille forward Mason Greenwood is reportedly close to switching his international allegiance to Jamaica, having formally requested a change of sporting nationality. At 23 years old, the former Manchester United player could make his debut for the Caribbean nation in upcoming international competitions.
Why Can Greenwood Play for Jamaica?
Although Greenwood played one match for England’s senior national team in 2020, FIFA regulations allow players to switch federations under certain conditions:
They have played no more than three official matches for their first national team before turning 21.
At least three years must have passed since their last appearance.
Since Greenwood only played a friendly match for England and has not been called up since, he meets the eligibility criteria to represent Jamaica, the country of his parents’ origin. However, this decision is permanent, meaning he would not be able to switch back to England in the future.
When Could Greenwood Debut for Jamaica?
If FIFA approves his nationality switch, Greenwood could make his Jamaica debut in their upcoming matches. The Reggae Boyz are looking to strengthen their squad ahead of the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers, aiming for a spot in the tournament hosted by Mexico, the United States, and Canada.
Greenwood's potential inclusion would be a huge boost for Jamaica, which has recently added several England-born players with Jamaican heritage, such as Michail Antonio and Leon Bailey, in hopes of competing at a higher international level.
