Leagues Cup 2025: New Format, Teams, and Key Changes for MLS vs Liga MX Tournament
The Leagues Cup has officially unveiled its revamped format for the 2025 edition, featuring 18 teams from MLS and 18 from Liga MX. The third edition of the tournament will take place from July 29 to August 31, ensuring no interruptions in the domestic calendars of both leagues.
Unlike previous editions, the Leagues Cup 2025 will no longer include all MLS teams. Instead, only the top 18 teams from the league will participate, aligning with Liga MX's 18-club structure.
From MLS, the qualifiers will be the top nine teams from each conference based on their performance in the 2024 season. However, there will be an exception: San Diego FC, the league’s newest franchise, will replace Vancouver Whitecaps, as the Canadian club will compete in the Concacaf Champions Cup and the Canadian Championship.
Group Stage: MLS vs. Liga MX Head-to-Head
The tournament will feature a group stage where each team will play three matches, followed by the knockout rounds. In this initial phase, every game will pit an MLS team against a Liga MX team, ensuring equal representation from both leagues.
Additionally, the quarterfinals will feature four MLS teams and four Liga MX teams, guaranteeing a balanced competition through the later stages of the tournament.
Concacaf Champions Cup Qualification and Tournament Rewards
As in previous editions, the Leagues Cup 2025 will award three spots for the Concacaf Champions Cup, reinforcing its importance as a pathway to continental competition.
Following the success of past tournaments—Inter Miami, led by Lionel Messi, won the 2023 edition, while Columbus Crew, spearheaded by Juan Camilo 'Cucho' Hernández, claimed the 2024 title—the 2025 edition promises even more intensity and a fierce rivalry between the top clubs from Mexico, the United States, and Canada.
