Morocco Tried to Recruit Lamine Yamal—Here’s How the Barcelona Star Responded
The FC Barcelona prodigy explained why he chose to represent Spain over Morocco
A Direct Conversation With Regragui
Lamine Yamal, the young star of FC Barcelona, has officially committed to representing Spain at the international level, despite strong interest from Morocco. The coach of the Moroccan national team, Walid Regragui, revealed on the Spanish show El Chiringuito that he personally attempted to persuade the 17-year-old winger to play for the African side.
“Lamine Yamal is a once-in-a-generation talent. We tried to bring him to the Moroccan national team, but it wasn’t possible,” said Regragui. He explained that he held multiple conversations with the player, during which he presented Morocco’s footballing project, including plans for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2030 World Cup.
However, just a couple of days after their discussions, Lamine Yamal responded respectfully but firmly: “Coach, I feel Spanish. I’ve played for Spain since I was a child.”
"He Was Always Honest With Us"
Regragui praised Yamal for his transparency and maturity throughout the process: “He never played games. He was honest from the start. He told us his heart was with Spain, and we have to respect that.”
Born in Spain to a Moroccan father and an Equatoguinean mother, Yamal was eligible to play for either country. His choice to wear the Spanish colors adds to a growing trend in modern football where players with multicultural backgrounds face national team decisions early in their careers.
According to Regragui, Morocco explored every possibility: “We spoke with his family, his lawyer… everyone around him. But from the beginning, he was clear that Spain was his path.”
Despite the disappointment, Regragui ended on a positive note: “He’s a great kid. Very mature for his age. I wish him nothing but success. He will mark an era in world football.”
