Spain Extends Luis de la Fuente’s Contract Until 2028
The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has announced the contract extension of Luis de la Fuente as the national team’s head coach until Euro 2028. De la Fuente, who took over in December 2022 following Luis Enrique’s departure, has led Spain to glory by winning the 2023 Nations League and the 2024 Euros in Germany, ushering in a new era of triumphs for La Roja.
Backed by Achievements
At 63, the Haro-born coach (La Rioja) has been a vital part of Spain’s football system for over a decade, having built a reputation for successful leadership within the youth ranks of the RFEF. His extension will be formally presented today at 17:00 CET at the Ciudad del Fútbol, with Rafael Louzán, the federation’s new president, in attendance.
De la Fuente now faces exciting challenges, including defending Spain’s Nations League title, with a quarterfinal clash against the Netherlands scheduled for March, and a much-anticipated Finalissima against Argentina, with the date still to be confirmed. Additionally, he will aim to secure qualification for the 2026 World Cup and Euro 2028, where Spain will defend their crown.
International Recognition
De la Fuente’s success has earned him nominations for The Best FIFA Coach Award and the Ballon d’Or, as well as being named the world’s best national team coach by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS). These accolades further solidify his position as the man to lead Spain into the future.
