UEFA Opens Investigation into Rodri and Morata for Controversial Chants
The UEFA has announced the opening of "disciplinary proceedings" against Spanish national team players Álvaro Morata and Rodrigo Hernández (Rodri) for various charges related to the chants of "Gibraltar, Spanish" during the official Euro 2024 title celebration on July 15 in Madrid.
Both players, with Morata serving as the team captain and Rodri named the tournament's best player, face four charges according to UEFA: breaching "general principles of conduct," violating "basic norms of decent conduct," using "sporting events for manifestations of a non-sporting nature," and "discrediting the sport of football, and UEFA in particular."
"The UEFA Control, Ethics, and Disciplinary Body (CEDB) will decide on the matter in due course," the UEFA stated in a press release.
In recent similar cases within Euro 2024, both Turkish defender Merih Demiral, for celebrating a goal with a gesture linked to the ultranationalist group "Grey Wolves" during the round of 16 match against Austria, and Albanian international Mirlind Daku, for chants against Serbia and North Macedonia following the 2-2 draw with Croatia, were suspended for two UEFA competition matches for which they would otherwise have been eligible.
