Xabi Alonso's Future Drifting Away from Real Madrid
Speculation over Xabi Alonso’s future has intensified following Real Madrid’s 3-0 defeat to Arsenal in the Champions League quarterfinals. But from Germany, Bayer Leverkusen has sent a clear message: they still count on their manager for next season.
Leverkusen not distracted by Madrid rumors
In an interview with Sky Sport Germany, Fernando Carro, CEO of the Bundesliga side, admitted he would have preferred a strong Madrid victory to silence the talk about Carlo Ancelotti’s uncertain future.
“To be honest, I would’ve preferred Real Madrid to win convincingly against Arsenal so their coaching position would be secure,” Carro said. “It’s normal in football—when a club like Real Madrid loses 3-0 in the quarterfinals, the rumors begin.”
Despite the noise, Carro emphasized that Leverkusen’s plans are firmly in place:
“We have a good relationship with Xabi and can talk to him about everything. He has a contract and feels very comfortable. We are planning next season with Xabi—preseason, matches, squad management—everything.”

A key figure in Leverkusen’s success
Xabi Alonso, under contract until 2026, has been one of the standout managerial revelations in Europe this season, guiding Leverkusen to a historic campaign in both Bundesliga and European competition.
While his name continues to be linked with high-profile clubs like Liverpool, Bayern Munich, and Real Madrid, Leverkusen remains confident that their coach will stay.
Unless there is a dramatic shift after the conclusion of the season, all signs point to Xabi continuing his journey in Germany—at least for now.
