(VIDEO) Keylor Navas is being criticized at Newell's over possible move to Mexico Pumas
After a brief and bumpy stint in Argentine football, Keylor Navas is ready for a fresh start in Liga MX. The Costa Rican goalkeeper, who spent just six months at Newell’s Old Boys, is now the latest signing for Pumas UNAM, in what promises to be a high-impact addition for the Mexican side.
A Complicated Exit from Rosario
Navas’ departure from Newell’s wasn’t without drama. During his time in Rosario, he reportedly had a distant relationship with club management, missed several early Clausura matches, and experienced friction with fans. Still, a solution was reached quickly after he missed the match against Banfield, allowing both clubs to finalize the transfer to Mexico.
The former three-time Champions League winner with Real Madrid is expected to arrive in Mexico in the coming days to join Efraín Juárez’s squad as soon as possible.
The exact numbers have not been confirmed, but reports suggest Newell’s rejected an initial offer of $1.3 million, hoping for a deal closer to $3 million. It has also been reported that Navas made a personal financial contribution to help facilitate the move to Pumas.
Rosario Already Searching for a Replacement
Meanwhile, Cristian Fabbiani side has already begun the search for a new starting goalkeeper. With Williams Barlasina filling in temporarily, Newell’s has so far earned one win and one loss in the Clausura tournament.
Among the potential replacements, Esteban Andrada is rumored to be the top candidate to take over the position left by Keylor Navas.
A World-Class Signing for Pumas
With his imminent arrival, Pumas secures a world-class goalkeeper a player not only carrying a decorated résumé but also looking to revive his top form in Mexican football.
Beyond his on-field impact, Keylor Navas’ name will bring renewed media attention and shine a spotlight on the Estadio Olímpico Universitario. All signs indicate that the official signing is just hours away, and the Costa Rican could be available for the match against Querétaro this Friday.
