Barcelona Misses Out as Liverpool Moves First for the Star Who Shined Under Xabi Alonso
Liverpool is making a strong move for Jeremie Frimpong, the dynamic right-back from Leverkusen who excelled under Xabi Alonso. Barcelona, slowed by financial limitations, falls behind in the race.
Liverpool Advances Talks With Frimpong
Jeremie Frimpong has emerged as a top priority for Liverpool as they plan for the 2025–26 season. The Dutch full-back, a key player in Xabi Alonso’s highly successful Bayer Leverkusen squad, is reportedly in advanced talks with the Premier League champions.
After confirming the departure of Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid, the Reds are eager to seal Frimpong’s signing quickly. The defender’s release clause is set at around €35 million, a figure well within Liverpool’s reach.
Meanwhile, Barcelona—long interested in Frimpong—has yet to make an official move. Despite being a top recommendation from both Hansi Flick and Deco, the club’s financial restrictions and the emergence of Jules Koundé on the right flank have delayed any approach.
A Standout Under Xabi Alonso
Frimpong’s performances exploded under Xabi Alonso, who led Leverkusen to their first-ever Bundesliga title. Known for his speed, dribbling, and attacking instincts, Frimpong scored 5 goals and provided 11 assists this season, after tallying 14 goals the previous year.
The player sees this summer as the right time to move on, especially with Alonso leaving for Real Madrid. Returning to England is a logical next step for Frimpong, who came through the Manchester City youth system and previously played for Celtic before joining Leverkusen in 2021.
Reports from England suggest Liverpool is already negotiating the structure of the deal with Leverkusen and has also opened discussions with the player’s camp. The club wants to secure the transfer before other suitors—like Barcelona—can react.
Frimpong’s Future Likely in the Premier League
Although Frimpong had previously expressed interest in LaLiga, the lack of urgency from Barcelona and the straightforward nature of Liverpool’s offer could prove decisive.
If finalized, this move would be another example of how Xabi Alonso’s influence helped shape the transfer market, elevating players like Frimpong to elite status. With Liverpool looking to reinforce their squad and maintain their domestic dominance, signing the Dutch international would be a major boost.
Barcelona, once again, may be left watching from the sidelines.
