CAS Lifts Two-Year Suspension For Gabigol
The Brazilian striker is cleared after the panel ruled that his conduct did not qualify as doping rule manipulation.
CAS Sides With Gabriel Barbosa
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) officially overturned the 24-month suspension handed down to Brazilian forward Gabriel Barbosa, also known as Gabigol, after ruling that his actions during an anti-doping test did not violate anti-doping rules.
The original sanction was imposed by the Brazilian Anti-Doping Sports Court (BADT) on March 25, 2024, after determining that Gabigol had attempted to interfere with the sample collection process during an April 8, 2023 doping control while playing for Flamengo.
Although the test results were negative, the 28-year-old striker was notified of a potential anti-doping rule violation on May 30. In response, Gabigol filed an appeal with CAS and requested a stay of execution while the case was under review.
Misconduct, But No Manipulation
A hearing was held in April in Rio de Janeiro, where CAS acknowledged that Gabriel Barbosa was “highly uncooperative” with the doping control officers. He reportedly delayed his arrival at the testing station, failed to maintain escort, and acted disrespectfully.
Still, the panel determined that these actions did not amount to “manipulation” under the World Anti-Doping Code (WADC). As a result, CAS granted the appeal and nullified the decision of the BADT, meaning no suspension will be enforced.
Ready To Reignite Career With Cruzeiro
Gabigol spent six seasons with Flamengo (2019–2024), becoming a standout figure in Brazilian football. Under the guidance of former Brazil national team coach Adenor Leonardo 'Tite', the striker played in 96 matches from 2023 to 2024 and scored 26 goals.
Now with Cruzeiro, Gabigol is aiming to get back on track and fully refocus on his playing career. This decision from CAS not only clears his name but also removes a major obstacle from his path moving forward.
