Santos advances to the Round of 16 after a comeback at Vila Belmiro

Santos secured its place among the Copa Sudamericana’s final 16 teams after defeating Universidad Central de Venezuela 4-2 at the Estadio Urbano Caldeira.

Universidad Central surprises Santos in the opening minute

The commanding advantage Santos had earned in the first leg appeared to promise a comfortable night at Vila Belmiro, but the match began with a blow that few could have imagined.

Only 30 seconds had passed when Samuel Sosa capitalized on a mistake by the home defense, found himself one-on-one with goalkeeper Gabriel Brazão and lifted the ball over him to make it 1-0.

Miguel Terceros restores calm for the Peixe

The home side’s response took time to arrive, although Santos began to control possession and establish itself more frequently in the opposition half as the first half progressed.

In the 38th minute, Miguel Terceros received the ball on the right flank, cut inside and fired a left-footed shot inside the near post to equalize.

Neymar’s introduction changes the match

Santos returned to the field with Neymar among its players.

The Brazilian forward, who had started the match on the bench, came on to play the entire second half, and his presence helped the team play with greater speed and clarity in the final third.

It did not take long for the transformation to be reflected on the scoreboard.

Ten minutes into the second half, Gabriel Barbosa appeared inside the six-yard box and connected with a header to complete the comeback and make it 2-1.

Gabriel Menino sealed qualification

The third goal arrived in the 65th minute following another move involving Gabigol.

The Brazilian forward beat the visiting defense and produced an effort that struck the crossbar. Gabriel Menino reacted quickly to the rebound and finished into an almost empty net to make it 3-1.

The goal ended any possibility of a Universidad Central comeback and mathematically secured the Peixe’s qualification for the Round of 16.

However, the Venezuelan side continued to compete and found a second goal in the 72nd minute.

Gonzalo Mottes rose above the defense inside the box and made it 3-2, although the goal was not enough to threaten the overall result of the tie.

Rony completes a six-goal night

Rony was left unmarked inside the penalty area and connected with a header in the 94th minute to establish the final 4-2 scoreline.

The goal brought an end to a tie dominated by the Brazilian side, which scored eight times across the two matches and confirmed its qualification with a five-goal aggregate advantage.

Santos takes its place among the final 16

The victory allows Santos to continue its Copa Sudamericana journey and underlines the strong attacking form of a team that knew how to respond after falling behind in the opening seconds.

Neymar’s participation during the second half also represented a positive sign for the Peixe, which welcomed back its biggest star ahead of the decisive stage of the competition.

Santos will face Macará in the Round of 16 after the Ecuadorian side finished top of Group A.
