Top 5: The most expensive signings of the European summer transfer window

  • The European transfer market once again proved there are no limits when the biggest clubs look to reshape their squads. Five deals broke a major financial barrier and completely changed the summer ranking.

Europe’s biggest clubs once again turned the transfer market into a competition running parallel to the one played on the pitch.

With only a few days remaining before the transfer window closes, five deals have already surpassed the $100 million mark, producing historic moves and once again demonstrating the enormous financial power of some of the continent’s biggest institutions.

The Premier League accounts for much of the spotlight. Chelsea, Manchester City and Tottenham are among the clubs responsible for the biggest investments, although they are not the only ones, as Real Madrid also managed to earn a place among the transfers that defined the summer.

5. Mateus Fernandes swaps London clubs for Tottenham

Fifth place belongs to Mateus Fernandes, who left West Ham to begin a new chapter with Tottenham.

Spurs spent around $107.9 million on the Portuguese midfielder in a deal completed on July 2, one that foreshadowed what would ultimately become one of the most ambitious transfer windows in the London club’s recent history.

4. Sandro Tonali becomes another major Spurs investment

The London club paid approximately $126 million for the Italian midfielder, although add-ons included in the agreement could take the deal up to $136 million.

With Tonali and Fernandes among their biggest reinforcements, Tottenham surpassed €260 million in transfer spending during the window, establishing themselves as one of the major protagonists of the summer.

3. A new gem lands at Real Madrid

Real Madrid also decided to make a huge investment to strengthen its project.

Los Blancos reached an agreement with RB Leipzig for Yan Diomandé, the 19-year-old Ivorian winger, for approximately $136.3 million. The figure could rise to $145 million depending on the fulfillment of different add-ons.

The deal also made Diomandé the most expensive African footballer in history.

2. Manchester City break their own record

The Citizens signed Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for approximately $157.5 million, a figure that made the English midfielder the most expensive signing in Manchester City’s history.

Anderson arrives after establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s standout players and playing an important role for England at the 2026 World Cup.

1. Chelsea push the market to the limit once again

Chelsea paid €138 million, approximately $161 million, to sign Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, placing the England international at the top of the ranking.

The 23-year-old attacking midfielder arrived at Stamford Bridge after recording 21 goals in 85 appearances for Aston Villa and representing England at the 2026 World Cup.

The transfer also set a new record by becoming the largest fee ever paid for an English footballer.

A Top 5 dominated by Premier League power

The ranking highlights a trend that is difficult to ignore: four of the five signings ended up at Premier League clubs, while Real Madrid are the only team outside the English top flight among the five most expensive deals.

  1. Morgan Rogers: Aston Villa → Chelsea — USD 161 million
  2. Elliot Anderson: Nottingham Forest → Manchester City — USD 157.5 million
  3. Yan Diomandé: RB Leipzig → Real Madrid — USD 136.3 million
  4. Sandro Tonali: Newcastle → Tottenham — USD 126 million
  5. Mateus Fernandes: West Ham → Tottenham — USD 107.9 million

Other major deals remain in progress, meaning the ranking of the most expensive signings of the European summer could still change.
