Historic Moment: ETA Breaks Barriers in Bundesliga
Marie-Louise Eta makes history by taking charge of Union Berlin men’s team.
Football history has been made as Marie-Louise Eta becomes the first woman to coach a men’s team in the Bundesliga. She has been appointed head coach of Union Berlin until the end of the current season, marking a groundbreaking milestone in the sport.
The decision follows the dismissal of Steffen Baumgart after a poor run of results, including a 3-1 defeat to bottom-placed Heidenheim. Union Berlin is currently battling relegation, making Eta’s task both challenging and crucial.
Previously, Eta worked within the club’s structure, coaching the U-19 team and serving as an assistant. Her familiarity with the squad and the club’s philosophy played a key role in her appointment during this critical period.
The club expressed confidence in her leadership, while Eta herself embraced the challenge, stating her belief in securing the necessary points to keep the team in the league.
Beyond the sporting implications, her appointment represents a major step forward for gender equality in football, breaking a long-standing barrier in one of Europe’s top leagues.
