Bayer Leverkusen missed the chance to move back within six points of Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich following a goalless draw with Wolfsburg.

Xabi Alonso's side are now eight points adrift of Bayern, who beat Werder Bremen 3-0 on Friday, after their stalemate at Volkswagen Arena.

Following Wednesday's dramatic extra-time victory over second-tier Koln in the DFB-Pokal, Florian Wirtz began the match on the bench.

His absence was certainly felt by Leverkusen, who registered just a single shot on target throughout the contest.

Wolfsburg carried the greater attacking threat and went closest to scoring in the 74th minute when Kilian Fischer's powerful drive rattled the woodwork.

Wirtz was introduced on the hour, but squandered a golden opportunity to snatch all three points when he fired off target in stoppage time, with both sides having to settle for a share of the spoils.

Though his side lost ground in the Bundesliga title race, it was a landmark result for Alonso.

The Spaniard has now overseen a joint-record of 27 consecutive Bundesliga away games without defeat by a coach, equalling Udo Lattek's run between 1985 and 1992.

Wolfsburg have now drawn their last three matches, while they failed to score for the first time in 21 home league games.
