Clement Mzize Leads Tanzania With a Brace and Eliminates Madagascar in CHAN 2024
In an exciting match at the Benjamin Mpaka National Stadium, Tanzania secured a crucial 2-1 victory over Madagascar, guaranteeing their spot in the knockout phase of the 2024 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN). This win marks a historic moment for the co-hosts, who advance to this stage for the first time after three attempts.
Mzize’s decisive performance
The standout player of the game was undoubtedly Clement Mzize, who set the pace with two early goals and kept Tanzania’s perfect record intact. The first goal came in the 13th minute following a clever run down the wing by Iddi Saleman, creating chaos in Madagascar’s defense. Mudathir Yahya’s shot hit the post, and Mzize was perfectly positioned to tap the ball into the net. Seven minutes later, Mzize doubled the lead with a clinical finish from a well-executed free kick by Feisal Salum.

Despite being behind, Madagascar showed resilience and settled into the game by controlling possession with short, precise passes. The island team nearly pulled one back before halftime, but Tanzania’s goalkeeper Suleiman Ali made a crucial save to tip Nomena Lalaina’s powerful shot over for a corner.
Tactical moves and late drama
In the second half, Madagascar reduced the deficit in the 64th minute through Razafimahatana, assisted by Rafanomezantsoa, reigniting hope for the visitors. Both teams made strategic substitutions: Tanzania’s coach Hemed Suleiman brought on Hamza for Shekhani Khamis early in the game, while Madagascar’s coach Rakotondrabe replaced goal scorer Razafimahatana with Razafimaro shortly after the goal.
Despite Madagascar’s efforts to overturn the scoreline, including several chances created, Tanzania stood firm in defense and nearly extended their lead with late opportunities for Mohamed Hussein and Shomari Kapombe.
A milestone for Tanzania
This victory not only ends Tanzania’s wait to reach the knockout stage but also boosts the morale of the co-host team, who now look ahead with confidence to the later rounds of the tournament. The team’s disciplined performance, combined with Mzize’s clinical finishing, puts them in a strong position to compete with Africa’s best football teams in the next stages.
Meanwhile, Madagascar faces a tough challenge to stay in the competition, needing a win in their next match and favorable results elsewhere. For now, Tanzania celebrates a well-earned victory and the promise of exciting football at CHAN 2024.
