Championship: Meslier mistakes cost Leeds as Burnley close in
Leeds United missed the chance to regain top spot in the Championship and are now looking over their shoulders after Burnley won.
Leeds United missed the chance to go back to the top of the Championship as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Swansea City on Saturday.
Coupled with Burnley's 1-0 victory over Bristol City, Leeds' hopes of gaining automatic promotion suffered a blow, with Daniel Farke's men now looking over their shoulders.
Illan Meslier's mistakes cost Leeds at Elland Road, where they had taken a 34-second lead, with Brenden Aaronson finishing off a goalmouth scramble.
Josh Tymon saw a 14th-minute penalty saved by Meslier before Ben Cabango hit the woodwork, however, as Swansea threatened a comeback.
That equaliser duly arrived shortly after the hour, when Meslier's fumble allowed Harry Darling to tuck in from a corner – it marked the goalkeeper's third error leading to a goal this term.
Substitute Wilfried Gnonto seemed to have won it for Leeds four minutes from time, but Swansea hit back again in the 96th minute when Meslier allowed Zan Vipotnik's strike from a tight angle to slip under him.
Leeds are two points behind leaders Sheffield United, who beat Coventry City on Friday, and level with Burnley.
The Clarets were dominant throughout against Bristol but required a bit of magic to earn all three points, with Zian Flemming's exquisite free-kick nestling in the top corner.
Burnley had 14 shots but could not find another way through, despite registering 1.86 expected goals (xG). Their trusty defence stood strong once again, though, as Scott Parker's team kept their 21st clean sheet in 26 games, not allowing a single effort on target.
Middlesbrough, meanwhile, boosted their own promotion hopes, fighting back to earn a 2-1 win over Oxford United, who now sit just four points clear of the relegation zone.
Michal Halik had given the visitors a first-half lead, but Boro fought back in the second half, with Kelechi Iheanacho equalising shortly after the break before Neto Borges flicked an audacious backheel into the bottom-right corner.
It is the first time Middlesbrough have won a home game after trailing at half-time since April 2023 (10 such games without a win), and it moves them up to seventh, level on points with West Brom, who lost to Norwich City.
Stoke City boosted their chances of staying in the second tier with a resounding 3-1 victory over Queens Park Rangers.
Junior Tchamadeu orchestrated the win, assisting Bae Jun-Ho's opener before scoring his first goal of the season in the 44th minute.
Million Manhoef added some gloss late on, and even though Yang Min-hyeok struck with a late consolation, it was not enough to stop Stoke from moving four points clear of the drop zone.
Data Debrief: Leeds come unstuck
Leeds would have felt confident in their chances of returning to the summit, having won each of their last four league games against Swansea.
In fact, they had won each of their last six league games against sides from Wales prior to Saturday. However, they made life hard for themselves, with Swansea accumulating more xG (1.99 to 1.75) and having just one shot fewer on target (six to Leeds' seven).
Burnley, meanwhile, extended their unbeaten streak to 26 matches (W16 D10) – it is their longest run without defeat since a 30-game streak between September 1920 and March 2021.
