Championship: Sheff Utd miss chance to go top, while relegation battle heats up
Sheffield United were unable to return to the Championship summit after losing to Oxford United, while Plymouth Argyle and Hull City won.
Sheffield United slipped to second in the Championship after going down 1-0 to relegation-threatened Oxford United at the Kassam Stadium on Saturday.
After Burnley had beaten Coventry City 2-1 earlier in the day to go to the summit of the league, the Blades knew a victory of their own would see them reclaim top spot.
However, Siriki Dembele's first-half strike separated the two teams, with Gary Rowett's side lifting themselves four points clear of the bottom three with six matches to play.
It also brought an end to the Blades' impressive away run – Chris Wilder's team had won six straight games on the road, their best streak in 132 years.
But the Blades remain in second after Leeds United were held to a draw by Luton Town, with Millwall the visitors to Bramall Lane on Tuesday.
At Ashton Gate, Bristol City moved into the Championship play-offs, climbing to sixth with a 2-1 victory over Watford, all-but ending the Hornets' hopes of a top-six finish.
The Robins took the lead when Max Bird pounced on a slip from James Abankwah, with Ross McCrorie tucking home the rebound from Nahki Wells' effort.
Wells then made it 2-0 in controversial fashion, firing a low effort past Egil Selvik for his ninth goal of the season, though Watford claimed the ball had gone out in the build-up.
The visitors barely threatened to get back in the game until substitute Mamadou Doumbia's neat turn and finish gave his side hope with 10 minutes left.
But Watford were unable to find a leveller and slipped seven points behind the Robins, who made the most of defeats for play-off rivals West Bromwich Albion and Coventry.
At the opposite end of the table, Ryan Hardie scored twice as Plymouth Argyle beat Norwich City 2-1 to close the Pilgrims' gap to Championship safety.
The win – Argyle's second in nine games – saw the hosts move four points from safety with six games to play.
Hardie gave the hosts the lead against the run of play as he coolly finished with his left foot past Angus Gunn before doubling his tally with a curled strike from inside the box.
Josh Sargent needed just 44 seconds of the second half to pull a goal back as he blasted past Conor Hazard.
Hardie should have completed his hat-trick, but he just failed to connect with Mustapha Bundu's cross from the left in the 86th minute.
But the Canaries could not find an equaliser as they dropped to 11th place, eight points off the final play-off spots.
There was also a huge win for Hull City, with defender Charlie Hughes heading in a 94th-minute winner at Sheffield Wednesday to seal a 1-0 win for the Tigers.
Hughes' powerful finish provided a grandstand end to an otherwise dire encounter which saw the Owls suffer a fourth successive home defeat.
Derby County, meanwhile, saw their four-game winning run came to an end as they were beaten 1-0 thanks to Eom Ji-Sung's late goal in a poor game against Swansea City.
Substitute Eom touched home Josh Key's arcing cross at the far post as Swansea snatched the points with their first chance of the afternoon 11 minutes from time.
Plymouth, Luton and Cardiff City make up the bottom three, with Derby outside the relegation zone on goal difference, with Stoke City and Hull coming next in the table.
