Crystal Palace Stuns Liverpool to Claim the Community Shield at Wembley
Liverpool began the season with a major setback, falling in the Community Shield to Crystal Palace in a penalty shootout (2–2, 3–2). The contrast was stark: the Reds, who spent nearly $300 million on signings this summer, could not overcome a Palace side that invested just $2 million in reinforcements.
How Did the Final Unfold?
The match at Wembley had the feel of a preseason clash in the first half, yet it was full of action. On his official debut, Hugo Ekitiké put Liverpool ahead after an assist from Florian Wirtz. Palace responded quickly: Jean-Philippe Mateta missed a one-on-one but won a penalty after being fouled by Virgil van Dijk, converting it himself to make it 1–1.
Shortly after, Jeremie Frimpong surprised with a cross that ended up in the back of the net, restoring Liverpool’s lead (1–2). However, Oliver Glasner’s men refused to give up and, with 13 minutes remaining, Ismaila Sarr fired a powerful shot inside the near post after a through ball from Adam Wharton to level the score.
What Happened in the Penalty Shootout?
The draw sent the match to penalties. Mohamed Salah opened the shootout for Liverpool with a high strike over the bar, setting the tone for what was to come. Goalkeeper Dean Henderson emerged as the hero, saving spot kicks from Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott.
Despite misses from Eberechi Eze and Borna Sosa, Palace finished the shootout successfully to lift the Community Shield for the first time in their history, adding a second trophy in just a few months after winning the FA Cup.
It was a significant blow for Arne Slot’s Liverpool, who were making their competitive debut under the new manager, while Crystal Palace proved they can go toe-to-toe with the Premier League giants—even with vastly different budgets.
