Atlético Mineiro and Gabriel Milito Part Ways
The coach and the Belo Horizonte club have reached an agreement to part ways after 12 winless matches, including the Copa Libertadores final.
Argentine coach Gabriel Milito has stepped down as manager of Atlético Mineiro, the club's director of football, Víctor Bagy, announced on Wednesday during a press conference.
“We reached a consensus, both from him and the club, that we would not continue with the work. It’s a decision made with a heavy heart because Milito is a very dedicated coach,” Bagy explained. He added, “When things are not going well, it’s necessary to change course.”
The decision came after Atlético Mineiro's 2-0 defeat against Vasco da Gama in the Brazilian Championship.
A Tough Run Without Victories
Atlético Mineiro’s last win was on October 22, against River Plate in the first leg of the Copa Libertadores semifinals. Since then, the team has gone 12 matches without a victory, including the finals of both the Copa do Brasil against Flamengo and the Copa Libertadores against Botafogo.
Milito's Tenure and Achievements
Milito took charge of the team in March 2024, replacing Luiz Felipe Scolari, and had a contract until the end of 2025. Just one month into his tenure, he secured his first title as a coach, winning the Campeonato Mineiro against fierce rivals Cruzeiro.
Current Standings and Final Match
Atlético Mineiro is currently 14th in the Brazilian Championship with 44 points, far behind league leaders Botafogo, who have 76. The team will play its final match of the season this Sunday against Atlético Paranaense.
