The CONMEBOL Libertadores matchday came to a tragic close following incidents that occurred both outside and inside the Estadio Monumental in Santiago, during the match between Colo Colo and Fortaleza.

CONMEBOL expressed its sorrow on Thursday over the death of two fans near the Estadio Monumental de Santiago, shortly before the game began.

"CONMEBOL deeply regrets the passing of two fans near the Estadio Monumental before the start of the match between Colo Colo and Fortaleza Esporte Clube. We extend our most sincere condolences to their families and loved ones. We stand with them during this difficult time," read the statement released by the South American football governing body on its X account.

Confusing Incident Involving Police

Both fans died on Thursday following a confusing incident involving the militarized police force, Carabineros de Chile, who are now under investigation for their possible involvement in the incident.
