Could Brazil Host the 2025 Libertadores Final?
The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has officially submitted a bid for Brasília to host the 2025 Copa Libertadores Final, proposing the iconic Mané Garrincha Stadium as the venue. This state-of-the-art facility, originally built for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, boasts a seating capacity of 70,000 and has hosted numerous high-profile football events.
Details of Brasília’s Bid
The proposal was submitted this week to CONMEBOL, which is expected to announce the host city in early 2025. The final is scheduled for November 29, 2025.
Ednaldo Rodrigues, President of the CBF, highlighted the city’s strengths as an ideal location: "Brasília brings together essential factors such as security, hotel capacity, air connectivity, and the grandeur of the Mané Garrincha Stadium," Rodrigues stated.
The bid is strongly supported by Ibaneis Rocha, Governor of Brasília, who emphasized the city’s proven track record of hosting major events, including:
- 2014 FIFA World Cup
- 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup
- 2021 Copa América
- 2021 FIFA U-17 World Cup
Additionally, the Mané Garrincha Stadium has recorded some of the highest attendances in the 2024 Brasileirão, including:
- Vasco da Gama vs. Palmeiras (65,000 spectators)
- Flamengo vs. Criciúma (60,000 spectators)
A Potential Return to Brazil
If Brasília is chosen, it would mark the return of the Copa Libertadores Final to Brazil after two years:
- 2023: The Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro witnessed Fluminense lifting the trophy after defeating Boca Juniors.
- 2024: The Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires hosted the all-Brazilian final between Botafogo and Atlético Mineiro, with Botafogo emerging victorious.
