Kicked Rival in Copa Libertadores Final, Says "My Leg Touched the Ball"
Botafogo midfielder Gregore said the play that led to his red card just 35 seconds into the first half was "very quick."
Gregore's brutal kick
"My leg did manage to touch the ball, but then I ended up hitting Fausto Vera's head," clarified the player, who recorded the fastest red card in a Copa Libertadores final.
In statements to the Brazilian press, Gregore expressed relief at the support shown by his teammates, who, as he left the field, told him they would "give it their all for him."
The midfielder, who joined Botafogo from Inter Miami this year, said he is "very happy with everything that's happening at the club."
Botafogo won its first Copa Libertadores title by defeating Atlético Mineiro 1-3 at the Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires and is currently leading the Brazilian Championship.
Botafogo Qualify for the Club World Cup
Botafogo de Futebol e Regatas, the Brazilian club, won its first-ever Copa Libertadores title on Saturday, marking a historic achievement in its 120 years and securing its spot as the final team to qualify for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.
The FIFA Club World Cup, to be held next year in the United States, will feature the best 32 teams from the past four years.
FIFA has established two ways for teams to qualify for the new World Cup: one for continental champions and another through a classification system for each confederation.
Botafogo, the new champion of the 65th edition of the Copa Libertadores, will travel to the FIFA Club World Cup as the South American champion.
With their title, they join Boca Juniors, Clube de Regatas do Flamengo, Fluminense Football Club, Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras, and River Plate as representatives of the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL).
According to FIFA, the new Club World Cup will be the most inclusive club football competition in history.
In its first phase, the tournament will divide the 32 clubs into eight groups of four.
It will begin on June 15, 2025, at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, and the final will take place at MetLife Stadium in New York/New Jersey on July 13.
