Olimpia and Peñarol share the points in the 2025 Copa Libertadores
Olimpia were held to a goalless draw on Wednesday against Peñarol at the Estadio Defensores del Chaco in Asunción—a result that puts a serious dent in their hopes of moving on in the 2025 Copa Libertadores. With just one point from three matches, the Paraguayan giants are stuck at the bottom of Group H.
Frustrating draw for the Decano
The Decano came into their third match of the tournament—second at home—after losing their first two games. The draw worked out better for Peñarol, who picked up a valuable point, especially after Vélez Sarsfield lost 2-1 to San Antonio at the Félix Capriles Sainz stadium in Cochabamba, tightening things up in the group.

In what was Fabián Bustos’ debut as Olimpia’s new manager, the Paraguayan side couldn’t find a breakthrough against the Uruguayans. In fact, Peñarol had a golden chance to win it from the spot, but Leonardo Fernández’s 52nd-minute penalty was saved by keeper Lucas Verza, after a VAR check by Venezuelan referee Jesús Valenzuela.
Group H standings
After this result, Olimpia remain last in Group H with just a single point. Peñarol sit fourth with four points, while Vélez Sarsfield and San Antonio lead the group with six points each, shaping up as the main contenders to reach the knockout stage. Up next, Olimpia will travel to Buenos Aires to face Vélez on May 8, while San Antonio will host Peñarol. Both games could be decisive in the race to reach the Round of 16 in the 2025 Copa Libertadores.
