Own Goals Sink Vélez as San Antonio Joins the Fight in The Libertadores
Two own goals handed San Antonio Bulo Bulo a 2-1 victory over Vélez Sarsfield on Wednesday, ending the Argentine side’s unbeaten run and giving them their first loss in Group H of the Copa CONMEBOL Libertadores.
At the Félix Capriles Stadium in Cochabamba, Brian Romero, one of Vélez’s key forwards, thought he had opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, but the goal was disallowed after a VAR review due to a handball in the build-up.
Guillermo Barros Schelotto’s team was in control of the match until misfortune struck just four minutes later. In the 26th minute, defender Elías Gómez accidentally sent the ball into his own net while trying to clear, giving San Antonio the 1-0 lead.
In the second half, with Vélez pushing for an equalizer, another defensive mistake sealed the match. This time, striker Michael Santos scored an own goal in the 86th minute, making it 2-0 for the Bolivian side.
Although 18-year-old midfielder Álvaro Montoro pulled one back in the 90th minute, there wasn’t enough time for a comeback.
With this result, Vélez and San Antonio Bulo Bulo are now tied at the top of Group H with 6 points each. Peñarol sits third with 4 points after a 0-0 draw against Olimpia, who remains at the bottom with just 1 point.

The next round of matches will take place in May: San Antonio will host Peñarol on May 6, while Vélez will welcome Olimpia on May 8.
