Palmeiras Investigates Alleged Racist Gestures in Libertadores Match vs. Cerro Porteño
Palmeiras has launched an internal investigation following allegations that one of its supporters made racist gestures toward Cerro Porteño fans during their Copa Libertadores group stage clash on April 9 at the Allianz Parque in São Paulo.
Facial recognition and legal action
In an official statement, the Brazilian club confirmed that it is using its facial recognition system, installed at the stadium entrances, to identify the person responsible for the discriminatory behavior reported in the stands.
“We do not tolerate prejudiced behavior, especially in our home, and we remain committed to eradicating all forms of discrimination from South American football,” Palmeiras stated.
The club is preparing a formal police complaint, as racism is considered a criminal offense under Brazilian law. Palmeiras also intends to ban the individual from attending any of its home matches in the future.
A disturbing pattern
This incident comes shortly after a similar controversy involving the two clubs during the Libertadores U-20 tournament, when Palmeiras youth players were allegedly subjected to racist abuse in Paraguay.
At the time, club president Leila Pereira criticized CONMEBOL for what she called an insufficient response to the allegations, calling for stricter action to combat racism in football across the continent.
